4 - Bus down mixing

Home based DAW/Multi track setups are now commonplace. Technology is now so well made and affordable that it’s possible to make great sounding records anywhere.

It’s so freeing for independent artists, not just financially but creatively.

When people are comfortable while recording things just flow better. Better decisions are made and everyone involved can implement a song first approach. Basically, what decision serves the song best? Try all the options and feel it out! There’s no time crunch because after all, your just hanging out in your house making music.

I recently mixed and mastered a project by Gold Coast duo Velvet Flowers, they recorded two songs over a weekend in one of the members lounge rooms. The songs sound great, they are true to the artists’ vision and the whole process was speedy and positive for everyone.

It really got me inspired, both to do my own music, and to encourage everyone to just go for it. Setup in your lounge room/home/unit/anywhere, and just be creative.

There’s always excuses made for not going all in and making your own music. Things like fear, judgement, quality, time, bad recording experiences, energy, the list goes on. I’ve spent a very long time putting off making my own music, probably using most or all of these excuses in my own head and to other people.

Damn it feels good to be creative, in your own space, on your own terms.

Please reach out if you need advice or help or want encouragement. I want to hear all about what your up to at the moment. I don’t think anything gives me more joy than helping other creatives reach their goals. I’ll leave you with this… Like nike says, Just Do It.
